Martin was flanked on both sides by old men in expensive suits with leather briefcases. Just when I was wondering if those cases really had anything in them, one of them opened his and pulled out a stack of papers.
Sans our breathing and the sound of papers being flipped through, the room was quiet. Too quiet. I didnât understand how Mari could stay in this big house all by herself. Although she wasnât by herself now. I doubted Martin would go to a hotel to stay. No, he would stay right here. Probably make her move out of the main bedroom. Or he might stay in there with her.
There was something off about their relationship. Or maybe it was the last case clouding my judgment.
The lawyersâthey didnât introduce themselvesâslid the papers across the table to me and Tony. Tony took one look at the papers and shoved them back across the table.
I only got a quick glimpse of the words at the top of the page. Non-Disclosure Agreement.
âWe are not signing that. And you canât force us.â
The lawyer looked at Tony for a second and then slid the papers back over to us. Martin leaned back in his chair with his arms folded across his chest, a smug look on his face.
The man dealing with the papers had salt-and-pepper hair and dark eyes. His face was stoic, as were the other lawyers. It was quite irritating to look at them. They were so smug. So sure of themselves.
I was tired of this charade. I didnât want to deal with these faceless suits, so I turned to address Martin directly. âYour father is missing. And you sayâdemandâthat we find him, and yet you wonât do anything to help.â I couldnât understand how he could be upset with us for not finding his father but then wouldnât do anything to help us find him. Make that make sense.
Martin sat up. âYou arenât even looking for him.â
âWe donât have any information. Youâre withholding it!â How were we supposed to look for him if we had nothing to go on? Why couldnât they understand that? It wasnât like it was in the movies or on TV. We needed actual evidence that a crime was committed, and a messy car and a weird phone call werenât enough. We needed witnesses to point us in the right direction.
He opened his mouth to say something. Another lawyer, one with light-green eyes and black hair, placed a hand on his shoulder.
âHernandez Enterprisesââ
âCould be the reason for his disappearance. Someone upset with the way he did business could have kidnapped him,â Tony cut him off.
The lawyers looked at Martin.
âWe donât care about whatever illegal bullshit your client is into. If you really want us to find your father, then you need to start talking,â Tony press.
Martin sighed.
âOr if you think negative press about your fatherâs factories hurt his business, wait until the press gets word that you refuse to help us find your father,â I added. âImagine all the negative conclusions customers will jump to once they read that.
